Partial Quotients Division
iOS Universel / Education
Partial Quotients Division helps students learn and practice the partial quotients division method step by step.
The app gives students a visual way to solve division problems by making a series of estimates, subtracting partial products, and adding the partial quotients together. This can make division easier to understand than the traditional long division algorithm.
Students can solve randomly generated problems or enter their own division problems.
The Partial Quotients Method:
In the partial quotients method, students divide by making estimates that are easy for them to use. For example, in 992 ÷ 8, a student might first estimate 100, leaving 192. Then the student might estimate 20, leaving 32. Finally, 8 goes into 32 four times. The result is found by adding the partial quotients: 100 + 20 + 4 = 124.
Different students can use different estimates, making the method flexible and easier to understand.
Teacher endorsements:
“The math apps by Esa Helttula allow students to practice and reinforce the specific computation strategies taught in class, with as much or as little scaffolding as necessary. They also provide individualized feedback to each student, with an immediacy that is not always possible through pencil and paper practice.”
— Rita Zeni, Ecole Sandy Hill Elementary, Abbotsford, BC, Canada
“There are students who see my examples who still need some guidance, and after using your app have said, ‘Now I get it.’ The feature of selecting possible solutions in each step helps some of my students who are still building their multiplication facts.”
— Zachariah R. Prowell, Highlands Elementary, Edina, Minnesota, USA
